Developmentalism and regional economic integration: European and Latin American perspectives during the Cold War
This presentation analyses the role of the idea of economic development in the design and implementation of regional economic integration in Latin America and Europe during the Cold War. The argument presented in the seminar is that the goal of promoting economic development was central in the Latin America initiatives of regional integration. It is argued that development and economic integration were the two sides of a coin in the Latin American region. The ideas of the Economic Commission for Latin America (ECLAC) were critical in the linking of economic integration to economic development. In particular, the document “Latin American Common Market”, published in 1958, influenced on the design of schemes such as the Central American Common Market (CACM) and the Andean Pact. With point of departure in the historical perspective, the seminar analyze the current EU-Latin American situation in relation to regional economic integration.
