Religious Celebrities on Instagram: Pentecostalism, Gender Politics and Postfeminism in Brazil

Brazil is a key place in which to study the intersections between digital culture and religion because social media has been harnessed by religious celebrities in order to further debates on gender politics. This research focuses on Cristiane and Renato Cardoso of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Igreja Universal Reino de Deus), who style themselves as Brazil’s foremost couple on relationship advice. Using rhetorics of male supremacy and glamourised femininity, they form an important part of the anti-feminist discourse in the country, yet also demonstrate the ways in which Evangelical Christians in the Global South adopt and adapt to modern day postfeminism.

Kim Beecheno is a Lecturer at Department of Human Rights and Democracy, Enskilda Högskolan Stockholm and Guest Researcher at NILAS. She recently finished an EU Marie Curie project on Digital Media and Pentecostal Subjectivities in Brazil (Uppsala University). She has a PhD in Sociology of Religion from King’s College London and an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of London.

The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues. It welcomes the presentation of papers from researchers and PhD students from different social science disciplines.

The seminar takes place on Fridays 14:00 – 15:30 every other week at the Library of the Nordic Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5).
