About the laboratory

The Phonetics Laboratory at the Department of Linguistics offers advanced research conditions for experimental studies of speech perception and production. We are located in "Södra huset" at Frescati campus.

Research in Phonetics at Stockholm University started in 1952, and our current laboratoty opened in 1977. The Phonetics Laboratory is continuously updated with high-quality equipment specially adapted for all kinds of experimental phonetics research. Today we attract researchers and students from all over the world.

Our history

Research in phonetics at Stockholm University started in 1952, when two new departments with state-of-the-art laboratory equipment were established: the Phonetic Research Laboratory and the Phonetic Training Laboratory. The initiators, Birger Calleman and Max Gorosch, became heads of each unit.

The premises of the Phonetics Laboratory were initially located in an apartment on Uggleviksgatan 11 in Stockholm. Here, teaching in pronunciation and phonetics was conducted with advanced equipment by the standards of the time.

Gunnar Fant, later a pioneering researcher at KTH, gave a course in experimental phonetics.

In 1965, the Department of Linguistics was formed, with Professor Björn Lindblom as Head of the Section for Phonetics.

In the early 1970s, the Department of Linguistics moved to the newly built campus at Frescati. The Section for Phonetics grew rapidly and produced ground-breaking research in speech physiology.

In 1977, The Phonetics Laboratory was established in its present location in Södra huset. This relocation resulted in a custom-built lab with advanced technical equipment and an anechoic chamber.

In 1997, two electrically-shielded test booths and three sound-attenuated experimental rooms were installed in the Phonetics Laboratory as well as a waiting area for research participants.

In 2006–2009, a grant from the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation enabled the purchase of an EEG system, several eye-tracking systems, and a Wave system.

The Lab is continuously being upgraded to maintain its state-of-the-art level. Throughout the years, the Phonetics Laboratory has closely collaborated with the Division of Speech, Music and Hearing at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Karolinska Institutet.
