About Executive MBA-programme

The Executive MBA programme at Stockholm Business School is a management development program designed according to international MBA standards and accredited by AMBA. The program provides managers and leaders with qualified knowledge in business acumen, leadership, and management.

The Executive MBA programme at Stockholm Business School is anchored in four thematic starting points; change, critical creativity, internationalization and ethics and sustainability.

These four starting points are integrated into the curriculum with the intention of giving participants a holistic and focused perspective on today's and tomorrow's business environment. In addition, the program module personal development is included, which gives you a deeper insight into how a modern organization works. Most trainers have PhDs and international research experience.

The Executive MBA programme consists of 15 courses given over four semesters on a part-time basis. The overall structure of the education is based on the relationship between these four semesters. The Executive MBA programme provides knowledge in:

  • Personal Development
  • Management, Ethics & Sustainability
  • Leadership & Change in Organisations
  • Economics & Global Markets
  • Risk & Resilience
  • Global Supply Chains & Logistics
  • Financial Accounting & Reporting Standards
  • Talent Management & the Future of Work
  • Strategic Marketing: Perspectives & Challenges
  • Technology Adoption & Data Strategy
  • Competitive Strategy & Innovation
  • Corporate Financial Strategy
  • Business Control in Dynamic Markets
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Master’s degree thesis

The Executive MBA programme starts off with an induction week in September.
The first three semesters include course sessions with participants on campus, Thursday afternoons and Fridays every two weeks, and an online seminar on Monday evenings every two weeks. There is also some study work in between sessions linked to each course.

At the end of the second semester, an international study tour is arranged with lecturers who address various aspects of international corporate and business life.

The fourth final semester contains a scientifically based and practically oriented essay work focused on a strategic aspect linked to your organization.

The language of instruction is mainly Swedish, but a large part of the course literature and some courses may be in English. All literature is included in the program fee and all reading material is available well in advance of each course session on the learning platform Athena.

Study trip

A study trip is carried out during the second semester of the programme. Currently, we have a collaboration with the Nova School of Business and Economics in Lisbon, Portugal.
During the study trip, lectures on Nova SBE's campus are combined with company visits. During the trip, the opportunity is given for networking with both Swedish companies on site as well as local small and large companies that trade with Sweden.

We live in a time of great complexity for businesses and organisations. Such pressures require advanced management skills based on sound judgment and a rounded perspective. There are no simple solutions and there is rarely a right answer – how then are managers to cope with the increased demands placed upon them?

We believe the answer lies in embracing complexity rather than attempting to reduce the challenges of modern business to quick fixes and glossy metaphors.

There are no “10 Steps to Greatness” programmes in modern business and the promises of inspirational or motivational gurus rarely deliver tangible results to the bottom line. All we can achieve, in terms of personal development, is the capacity to recognize more fully what we confront and consider how we might – under unique circumstances – best move forward: for ourselves, our organisations and our societies.

As a state-based university, we are driven first and foremost by a desire to provide broader societal benefit through high-quality, evidence-based development and education. We approach the subject of business administration in ways that are holistic, challenging and, we believe, valuable to participants. We encourage people to question fundamental and taken-for-granted assumptions about their everyday understanding of management and leadership practice.

While our Executive MBA inspires and motivates, that is not its sole purpose. By anchoring everything we do in a substantial base of evidence, we move away from the veneer of management “how to” guides and into the realms of substance and what is actually known. We believe that blind faith and management superstition is no substitute for sound reason however well intentioned.

The examination of the courses consists of, among other things, written assignments and active participation at the lectures and during the online seminars. A scientifically based and practically oriented essay work is carried out during the final semester (15 ects) focused on a strategic aspect linked to your business/organization.

The Executive MBA program leads to an Ekonomie Magisterexamen (Master of Science in Business Administration) and comprises 60 academic credits (ects). Study certificates and diplomas and diplomas are obtained after successful completion of the program and are awarded during a ceremony after completion of the education.

The next training start is autumn 2023. The earlier you start your application, the better.

Eligibility

Suitable prerequisites are a first-level degree comprising at least 180 higher education credits, or equivalent. We also emphasize solid professional experience, attitude, motivation and the ability to absorb the program and contribute to the future development of your own organization and business.

The Executive MBA program is taught in a combination of English and Swedish; it is therefore required to have a command of both languages if applying to the program.

Application

The admission process consists of three clear steps. It is not possible to simply register for this training, but your application needs to go through our three steps to be assessed. A personal visit aims partly to provide a deeper understanding of the program, partly to see if the applicant has the potential to implement this successfully and have genuine benefit from it for their business and organization.

  • Expression of interest via the form below to receive basic information by e-mail.
  • Personal visit booked via executive@sbs.su.se
  • Submission of a fully completed application.

We go through each application individually and look for diversity in many different areas. Applicants normally receive an acceptance notice within a few days and within two weeks at the latest.

Participation fee

The program fee for participation is SEK 450,000 (VAT is added), which is divided into four semester fees of SEK 112,500. Possible travel costs are added. Course literature and all meals during the course days are included in the fee.

An important factor in participating in the Executive MBA at Stockholm university is that you have professional working experience along with your employers support. This is vital as the employer (a legal entity) needs to be billed the program costs, you cannot pay for the education privately.

The organization that supports your program registration and your participation must be a legal person, such as a limited company (including state and municipal owned), trading company, economic association, non-profit association or foundation, state, municipality and county council.

For all our Executive MBA alumni, we organize mingling evenings or other networking activities under the theme of research and working life.

There you will have the opportunity to meet other Executive MBA participants, take part in the latest research and discuss current challenges that your business or you yourself are facing.

Stockholm Business School (SBS) has a current partnership agreement with the European Club Association (ECA) to provide executive education support to ECA’s highly regarded Club Management Programme (CMP).

ECA is the sole, independent, representative body for football clubs at the European level and, in addition to maintaining high level involvement in European football governance matters, seeks to promote knowledge sharing, information and services among its member clubs.

Stockholm Business School worked with ECA on the design and delivery of the first CMP programme and has been selected, once more, to provide academic support for an enhanced second edition of the programme. One module of the program, which will bring participating football executives travel to Stockholm, will be held at Stockholm Business School in March 2023.
