Forskarseminarium: "Camp effects - memories, border selectiveness, and the “over-there” trivia in the Central Asian-Sino border region" med Huai-Tse Yang

Abstrakt:

What are the post-camp realities of the people who experienced arbitrary detention and long-term confinement? What do the effects of a state-conducted and ethnic-targeted confinement project persist, transborderly, culturally, and bodily? Along with China’s mass incarceration since late 2016 in its Northwest, targeted by the facilities, Turkic communities’ transborder experiences and imaginations are significantly affected in the bordering Central Asian areas. By drawing on my ethnographic work in both Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, I investigate the camp and transborder experiences of Kazakhs and Uyghurs who fled from northwest China, probing how the camp’s effects reproduce people’s daily life and conditions. In this seminar, I will present preliminary analyses from my working chapters of individuals’ camp experiences and their trivial but subtle border orientations, illustrating how, in this region, selectiveness functions as a salient trait of the borderness along with the camps, and how people imagine and seek to sustain their transitional connections for now and the future. 

Bio:

Huai-Tse Yang is currently a PhD student in cultural anthropology at the Department of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology, Uppsala University. Through working with Kazakhs and Uyghurs in Central Asia, he attempts to comprehend and write about the long-term consequences of the camp system in northwest China, addressing how the effects of a series of high-tech penal colonies, prominent in the racial-colonial order, percolate across daily life in the Central Asian-Sino border region.
