Francesco C. Billari

Francesco C. Billari is Professor of Demography and President of the Dondena Centre for Research on Social Dynamics and Public Policies at Bocconi University, Milan. Professor Billari has held appointments at the Department of Sociology and Nuffield College, Oxford University, and at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. He is a Fellow of the British Academy and Honorary President of the European Association for Population Studies. His main interest is the study of population change, family and the life course. He has collaborated in designing the Generations and Gender Programme and is PI of the ERC Advanced Grant Discontinuities in Household and Family Formation.

 

Jan M. Hoem

Jan M. Hoem was Professor of Demometry at Stockholm University and the founder of the Stockholm University Demography Unit (SUDA). He received his PhD in actuarial science and mathematical statistics from the University of Oslo in 1969. Following positions at the University of Oslo, Statistics Norway and the University of Copenhagen, he became Professor at Stockholm University in 1981 and was the director of SUDA until he was appointed Director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) in Rostock, Germany, in 1999. At MPIDR he formed the Laboratory for Fertility and Family Dynamics in Europe, which trained and supported many of today’s European family demographers.

Professor Hoem is best known for his work on event-history analysis, especially linking life course biographies to social and economic change. In 2009, he returned to SUDA where he was an active and beloved colleague until his death in 2017.
