Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (MSCA)

MSCA consists of five actions:

Doctoral Networks (DN)

Projects within all fields of research. TThis action promotes research and innovation by providing mobility and training of doctoral students.
Organizations (”beneficiaries”) from at least three member countries (MS) or associated countries (AC), each of which must recruit at least one PhD candidate. In addition, persons from anywhere across the world can participate. Funding up to 360 person-months.
DN are encouraged to lead to “Industrial” or “Joint Doctorates” (for this, 180 additional person-months can be applied for):

  • Joint Doctorates (JD) – should lead to a joint, double or multiple doctoral degree valid in at least one MS or AC.
  • Industrial Doctorates (ID) – joint supervision from academic or non-academic organizations which can belong to the same MS or AC.

Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF)

Postdoctoral Fellowships provide support to researchers holding a PhD with up to 8 years research experience after defending their doctoral thesis and who wish to work in another country within or outside Europe. Projects in all fields of research. Euratom projects can now also be granted support.
There are two types of PF:

  • European Fellowships (EF) – open to researchers within or outside Europe. Host institution within EU (or HE-associated countries). Length: 12-24 months. The researcher can be of any nationality.
  • Global Fellowships (GF) - researchers from MS or AC go to a host institution outside Europe. Length: 24-36 months (12-24 months in third country and 12 months mandatory return phase.)

Staff Exchanges (SE)

Common research- and/or innovation programmes designed to contribute to knowledge exchange by offering staff a stay at an institution in another country and/or sector within or outside Europe. The consortium must consist of at least three organizations from three different countries, two of which from another EU-MS or EU-AC. If the organizations come from the same sector (academic or non-academic), the consortium must include at least one organization from a non-associated third country. Interdisciplinary stays within the same sector are possible within Europe (at most 1/3 of the project’s person months). The exchanges can include all types of personnel who contribute to research and innovation, such as PhD candidates, experienced researchers or administrative and technical personnel. The length of the exchange is between 1 and 12 months per person.

Co-funding of regional, national and international programmes (COFUND)

COFUND aims to promote excellent science, mobility and career development by supporting programmes for PhD candidates (Doctoral Programme) and researchers (Fellowship Programme). COFUND is co-financed by the EU and national actors. Every application must have a single beneficiary who is also responsible for co-financing. The beneficiary must be established in an EU Member State or an Associated Country. A minimum of three researchers must be recruited. The maximum length of the project is 60 months.

Before you write your application

REIS gives support before you start to prepare your application.

  • Information about work programmes and calls.
  • Seminars and workshops with information about the various actions in the programme and what to consider when writing an application.

When entering into agreements for projects within Horizon Europe

The Office for Research, Engagement and Innovation Services (REIS) will assist you with all relevant agreements when you have received notification that your Horizon Europe project has been granted funding.

Internationally funded research projects, including those funded by the EU, constitute a commitment for the whole University. The University administration handles the preparation of contracts and agreements (e.g. “Grant Agreement Preparation”) in cooperation with the department where the project is placed. The different stages leading up to the signing of an agreement are presented in the table below. The Contracts team at REIS ensures that each stage in the work process is carried out until the agreement has been signed and a project account has been set up in the University’s financial management system.

The head of REIS signs all EU agreements on delegation from the President, after approval from the head of department and in consultation with the Deputy Vice President concerned. The researcher in charge of the project must obtain approval of the project application from their head of department (or the equivalent) already during the application stage. The researcher is also responsible for reviewing the agreement from their own perspective as principal investigator. A legal advisor from the Office of the President performs a legal review of some agreements. The economic / financial parts of the agreement are reviewed by the financial officer of the department (or the equivalent). This whole process is coordinated by the Contracts team.
