Within CIVIS, it is possible to plan and organize Blended Intensive Programmes (BIP), i.e. shorter courses of 3-6 ECTS that contain both a physical and a virtual part - together with other partner universities. A prerequisite for a BIP course is that the course is taught together with at least two other CIVIS universities in so called Erasmus programme countries and that at least 15 students with Erasmus grants from other CIVIS universities participate. It is important that the teacher team developing the BIP already plans for the main target group for the BIP and how reaching the minimum number of Erasmus students will be achieved. Students, teachers and staff participating in a mobility within a BIP can apply for an Erasmus grant.
An application to offer a BIP entails that together with at least two other CIVIS universities, you plan and teach a joint course at 1st (Bachelor’s), 2nd (Master’s) or 3rd (Doctoral) cycle After the BIP is completed and reported, the coordinating department may be granted €6,000-8,000 in organizational support for planning and implementation, depending on the number of students participating in the course. A BIP on 1st or 2nd cycle can also generate local revenues for FTE and annual performance equivalents (HÅS and HÅP), see below.

Integration of BIP’s at Stockholm University

The following requirements apply for applications regardless if the Stockholm University department is coordinating or co-participating:

  • Remember to establish your participation in a BIP according to the procedures and practises in your department already in the planning stage of the BIP, before submitting the BIP application to CIVIS.
  • Once a BIP has been granted by Civis the internal procedures should follow (Swedish).

The following requirements apply for applications that are coordinated by Stockholm University:

  • The course should be planned and held together with partners at two or more other universities in so called Erasmus programme countries within CIVIS.
  • The course should include both an on-campus part of five full days in Sweden and a virtual part.
  • At least 15 students with an Erasmus grant participating in the course as incoming exchange students from another CIVIS university within the BIP partnership.
  • The course should award 3–6 ECTS (HP).
  • The course should be formally established as a course at Stockholm University (by decision on the establishment and adoption of a course plan). This applies to courses on 1st and 2nd cycles. For courses at 3rd cycle a course plan or course description can be decided in accordance with the normal routines at the department. In order to allow enough time for these administrative procedures, early contact with the responsible faculty office is highly recommended.
  • The content of the course should be suitable for one of the following five interdisciplinary thematic areas of CIVIS:
    • Hub 1 Climate, Environment and Energy
    • Hub 2 Society, Culture and Heritage
    • Hub 3 Health
    • Hub 4 Cities, Territories and Mobilities
    • Hub 5 Digital and Technological Transformation
  • For BIPs that are established here at Stockholm University, the normal regulations and procedures for Erasmus Plus exchanges apply: Administration av studentmobilitet (in Swedish).

BIP is an excellent opportunity to obtain funding for a second edition of an existing course or for developing a course module into a BIP, particularly suitable for field courses. BIP also makes it possible to initiate new collaborations with colleagues at the other alliance partner universities.

For the time being BIPs will be the only funding opportunity to create and/or develop courses within CIVIS. However, BIP-calls will be organized every half year and will remain an important funding possibility for many future education collaborations in CIVIS.
