SPEAKERS: Ms. Kanzha Vina, Chairperson, Sanggar Swara, Jakarta and Mr. Nono Sugiyono, Chairperson, Arus Pelangi, Jakarta, both with long experience of grassroots work in the Indonesian LGBTIQ movement as well as international collaboration in the field.
DISCUSSANT: Helena Berglund, Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Stockholm University.

While Indonesian society has historically embraced a relatively liberal and tolerant stance towards sexual minorities, a noticeable shift in the societal climate has unfolded since 2016. The hard-fought gains secured by the Indonesian LGBTIQ movement during the democratization years now face severe threats, prompting a fundamental change in civil society's orientation from proactive rights promotion to a defensive posture against direct oppression.

In this seminar, Ms. Kanzha Vina and Mr. Nono Sugiyono, esteemed activists deeply engaged in the Indonesian LGBTIQ movement, particularly championing transgender rights, will discuss their experiences and the background to this change, as well as offering their insights of strategies to counter the pressing challenges confronting the Indonesian LGBTIQ movement.

The seminar is co-arranged by the Department of Political Science and Stockholm Center for Global Asia, Stockholm University.
