Call for Applications: The Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia Research Stipend 2026
Researchers in the social sciences from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia are invited to apply for the Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia Research Stipend 2026. The stipend supports a one- to three-month research stay at the Stockholm Center for Global Asia, Stockholm University, during April–June or September–November 2026.

Stockholm Center for Global Asia is a multidisciplinary research center in the social sciences at Stockholm University. It brings together scholars from across the social sciences to study Global Asia. The Center provides a platform for research collaboration, academic exchange, and public dialogue. Visiting researchers are offered a workspace, access to the Stockholm University Library and its electronic resources, and the opportunity to participate in the Center’s seminars and workshops.
Purpose and Background
The stipend was established through a donation from the former Association Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia (Föreningen Vietnam, Laos, Kambodja). It supports research conducted in the spirit of the Association’s commitment to solidarity with the peoples of these three countries. The purpose is to promote scholarly work that advances understanding of development, democracy, and human rights in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia, or in comparative perspective across them.
Who Can Apply
The stipend is open to researchers in the social sciences from universities or research institutions in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia. Applicants may be at any stage of their academic career but must be engaged in research relevant to the aims of the stipend.
Period of Residence
Successful applicants will be hosted by the Stockholm Center for Global Asia for one to three months during one of the following periods in 2026:
- Spring: April – June 2026
- Autumn: September – November 2026
The stipend covers
- Return airfare to and from Stockholm
- Accommodation in Stockholm
- A contribution towards living expenses (depending on the length of stay)
Research Focus
Applications are invited for research projects that are grounded in the social sciences and address either of the themes or several of the themes:
- Development, democracy, and human rights in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia; or comparative studies involving at least one of the three countries.
Expectations for Stipend Holders
Recipients are expected to:
- Be in residence at the Stockholm Center for Global Asia for the duration of their stay;
- Participate actively in the Center’s seminars and academic activities;
- and Present their research in a seminar organized by the Center.
Application Procedure
Applications must be submitted in English and include:
- Research proposal (maximum 2,000 words) outlining objectives, framework, methods, and relevance;
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum three pages);
- Letter of institutional affiliation confirming employment or position at a university or research institution in Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia;
- Preferred period of residence (April–June or September–November 2026).
- Incomplete applications or applications submitted after the deadline on 12 December 2025, will not be considered.

Selection and Notification
Applications will be evaluated by a committee appointed by the Stockholm Center for Global Asia. Selection will be based on:
- Academic merit,
- Relevance to the aims of the stipend,
- and Feasibility of the proposed research during the stay in Stockholm.
Applicants will be notified of the outcome by January 2026.
About the Donor
The Association Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia (Föreningen Vietnam, Laos, Kambodja) was a non-partisan and non-religious solidarity organization dedicated to supporting the peoples of the three countries. Its work focused on disseminating knowledge about their political, economic, social, and cultural developments, and on contributing to dialogue and support for democracy and human rights.
Upon its dissolution in 2022, the Association decided to donate its remaining funds to Stockholm Center for Global Asia, Stockholm University, to continue fostering research in this spirit.
