Research groups

The Baltic Sea Centre focuses on scientific issues that are important for understanding and managing the Baltic Sea and its catchment area. Our researchers form an interdisciplinary team whose projects have a strong focus on being applied and able to support decision-making and administrative processes. The environmental challenges we study are eutrophication, environmental pollutants, fisheries, coastal exploitation and climate change. We apply a source-to-sea approach since many environmental problems in the Baltic Sea are caused by human activities in the catchment area.

Baltic Nest Institute

The Baltic Nest Institute (BNI) at Stockholm University provides scientific basis for ecosystem-based management of the Baltic Sea by maintaining and developing data bases and models with a holistic Baltic Sea perspective.

Baltic Sea Fellows

As a continuation of the governmental funding of strategic Baltic Sea research, this interdisciplinary network of young Baltic Sea, Baltic Sea Fellows, formed at Stockholm University 2018. Their research cover the whole range from basic marine research to applied legal aspects and decision support.

Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim)

The Centre for Coastal Ecosystem and Climate Change Research (CoastClim) is a multidisciplinary strategic partnership and research infrastructure project between Stockholm University and the University of Helsinki. The research within CoastClim evaluates the links between coastal biodiversity, carbon cycling, and climate feedbacks.

Hydrogeodesy Lab

By using geodetic methods to measure or infer hydrological quantities and their changes over time, Hydrogeodesy supports hydrological monitoring, management, and research via measurements that standard hydrological observations cannot obtain.
