Research subjects

Stockholm University Baltic Sea Centre focuses on scientific issues that are important for understanding and managing the Baltic Sea and its catchment area.

Our researchers form an interdisciplinary team whose research questions and projects have a strong focus on applications and supporting decision making and administrative management processes. We focus on the enivornmental challenges of eutrophication, hazarduous substances, commersial fisheries, coastal exploitation and climate change.

We apply a source-to-sea approach, since many environmental challenges in the Baltic Sea are caused by human activities in the cathment area, and the strong gradients and stratified character of the inland sea are significant for the transport of nutrients and hazardous substances from rivers to coastal areas and the open sea.

Our research areas

Marine Science

The seas cover more than 70 percent of the surface of our planet, and hosts a great variety of habitats. They range from artic ice landscapes, Baltic Sea archipelagos, tidal flats, coral reefs and trenches deeper that Mount Everest is high. At Stockholm University we perform research to discover more about the sea.

Estuarium

Baltic Sea Catchment

Human activities contribute to a higher pollution load in the sea. Researchers at the Baltic Sea Science Centre study the transportation of different types of pollution, such as nutrients or hazardous substances, from land to sea.

Climate dynamics and climate change

Over long timescales, the circulation systems co-evolve with ice sheets, mountain ranges, and redistributions of carbon in the climate system. Researcher study the circulation and associated feedback mechanisms that influence exchanges of energy and materials between compartments of the climate system, and create teleconnections and climate variability.

Coasts of the Baltic Sea

Our coastal research combines several disciplines, to reach a broad and multidisciplinary understanding of the coasts of the Baltic Sea and how they are affected by human activities, pollution and climate change.

Meteorology and atmospheric science

Research in Meteorology and Atmospheric Science deals with the atmosphere's three layers: the Troposphere, the Mesosphere and the Stratosphere. We study how and why the atmosphere moves, how aerosols (small particles) form, are transported and interact with clouds, precipitation and solar radiation, and how this affects polar climates.

Oceanography

The field of oceanography encompasses both surface currents and deep water circulation. Surface currents and the overturning water that forms deep water currents, distribute heat and salt between different regions of the Earth as well as with depth in the oceans.

Open Baltic Sea

Research on the open sea focuses on how the large-scale ecosystem dynamics of the Baltic Sea are changed by human impacts. Issues include eutrophication, fisheries and how environmental toxins are transported and dispersed in the sea.
