Master of Science Programme in

- not starting in Autumn 2011

Second year of the program is given 2011/12. (Last time)

General information

Information technology is rapidly becoming a key enabler in the evolution and transformation of organisations and society. As a consequence of this development, there is an increased demand for skilled engineers that who can undertake the role as tomorrow's information leaders.

The aim of the programme is to educate students who can manage and participate in the design, development, establishment, usage, management and administration of large IT systems that support organisations on the operational, tactical as well as strategic levels.

The programme will give students advanced knowledge of systems design including requirements engineering, software maintenance and agile systems development. The programme will provide the students with a strong background in project management for the design and operation of IT systems, including process management, leadership and financial aspects. The programme will also give a firm understanding of the opportunities and limitations of IT in supporting and transforming organisational activities, including business models, business processes, decision support and knowledge management.

Programme outline

The program consists of four terms. Each term consists of a number of compulsary and elective courses. The programme also includes two methodological courses which provide a good basis for post-graduate studies: Theory of Science, Research Methodology and Scientific Communication. These courses enable the student to develop generic academic skills and capacities such as presenting results in a clear and precise manner and the ability to locate relevant information. These courses will also develop scientific attitude of the students and help them in evaluating theories and applications.

The first term consists of four compulsary courses on system analysis and design and research methodology.

The second term consists of one compulsary methodological course and a number of elective courses on IT management, information systems, software engineering and knowledge management.

The third term consists of one compulsary course on project management, where the student will carry out a large project in cooperation with business/industry, as well as elective courses on the above described fields.

The fourth term is devoted to the Final Degree Project/Master's Thesis, which is focused on solving a problem within the scope of the programme. Here the student will get the opportunity to exhibit a deep understanding of management and engineering of  information systems.

Career prospects

The programme will provide students with a solid background which will enable them to take up a wide range of roles in designing IT systems and software for the management of enterprises. These roles include Enterprise Architect, B2B Architect, Technology Consultant, Business Process Designer and Database Architect.

The strategic location of the Campus Kista offers the opportunity of interaction between education, research and industry in a unique way. Many students have, after the programme, taken up careers in international companies such as Ericsson and Google within Europe, US or the rest of the world. Several students have also started PhD studies in areas such as knowledge representation and model-driven software design.

Degree

Students who have successfully completed this Master's Programme will be awarded the Swedish degree "Teknologie masterexamen", translated into English as "Degree of Master of Science (Two Years)"
