Introduction to the Swedish School System

Spring 2024, Stockholm University offers an introductory course about the Swedish school system primarily for teachers from Ukraine. The course is offered on behalf of the National Agency for Education in Sweden (Skolverket).

The course is called An introduction to the Swedish school and education system for educators from other countries (7,5 ECTS)

The course aims to provide the participants with basic knowledge of the organization of Swedish schools and early childhood education. It will also cover the relationship between teachers and pupils in Sweden from a historical and contemporary perspective.

The participants will gain knowledge and understanding of the values of democratic and human rights in a Swedish school system.

The course deals with didactic questions, learning processes, cognitive development and cultural diversity based on participants experiences. It will also cover various forms of assesment and evaluation.

After completing the course, participants should be able to work as, for example, teaching assistants in different school form in Sweden.

The course does not result in teacher certification.

The following requirements have to be met and should be corroborated with documents if available.

  • Documented teaching training or documented pedagogical post-secondary education of at least two year full-time studies or,
  • Documented experience of teaching and instruction at schools and/or early childhood education and,
  • English skills on a level where you can read and understand different kinds of texts related to this topic.
 

The course is free of charge. Books and other teaching materials will be provided by the university.

Travel expenses and other equipment needed for studies, such as computer, is not covered by the university.

The course is also available at Göteborgs universitet (University of Gothenburg), Högskolan Dalarna (Dalarna University College), Malmö universitet (Malmö University) and Stockholms universitet (Stockholm University).

The teaching period and form (campus or online) will differ between universities, but the content will be the same.
