Welcome to a workshop on teaching and learning with Centre for the Advancement of University Teaching (CeUL). This is a workshop where the language of instruction is English. This workshop is suitable for anyone with knowledge of English, regardless of mother tongue.

Small group-based instructional methods can produce a wide variety of positive educational outcomes. These outcomes, however, only occur when instructors create conditions which motivate students to prepare for and engage in give-and-take discussions.

Fortunately, by applying three fundamental principles, instructors can create these conditions in the vast majority of learning groups. These principles are:

1) promoting individual and group accountability

2) using assignments that link and mutually reinforce individual work, group work and total class discussions

3) adopting practices that stimulate give-and-take interaction within and between groups.

In this workshop you will be introduced to the first main design principle behind team based learning and discuss the opportunities to introduce the principles in your own teaching.

As preparation, please do the following

1) Watch the film at the main page of  http://www.teambasedlearning.org/ (introductory film to team based learning, those who participated in UL1 have already seen it)

2. Scan the attached documents that will be distributed in advance of the workshop.
