About the Bridging Programme

The Bridging Programme for Teachers Educated Abroad is a teacher programmed commissioned by the government. The contents of the programme depend upon each student's education background.

The aim of the programme is to utilize the skills of foreign teachers and preschool teachers and provide increased opportunities for employment in Swedish schools or preschools. The students of the programme study courses that lead to a Swedish teaching qualification.

Students study either for a Swedish teaching degree or supplement their foreign teaching degree with subjects and skills that are specific to the Swedish school or preschool. Every student in the programme receives an individual course of study. The course of study is determined after an evaluation of previous studies, meaning the length and contents of the studies vary.

Working as a Teacher in Sweden

To obtain permanent employment as a teacher or preschool teacher, you must have a teacher or preschool teacher certification. The Swedish National Agency for Education (Skolverket) is the authority that issues teacher certification and preschool teacher certification.

To obtain a teacher's or preschool teacher's certification (lärarlegitimation or förskollärarlegitimation)

You must have a teaching degree or a preschool teaching degree in order to obtain certification. The contents of the teacher or preschool teacher degree also plays a role. The degree must include preparatory studies for teaching and studies in teaching subjects.

Obtaining teacher certification with a foreign teaching degree

You can obtain a teacher or preschool teacher certification with a foreign teaching degree. However, you may need to supplement your education with studies first. The Swedish National Agency for Education assesses what is lacking in your education and whether it can be compensated for through studies.

You apply to the Swedish National Agency for Education for teacher and preschool teacher certification.

Contents of the teacher and preschool teacher licence

The teacher or preschool teacher certification shows in which subjects and grades you are certified to teach. This means that you will only be certified to teach the subjects and grades for which your teaching programme prepares you.

For example, you may have certification as a:

  • Preschool teacher in preschool and preschool class
  • Teacher of maths, Swedish, science, social studies, English and art in grades 1-3
  • Teacher of maths in grades 4-6, 7-9 and upper secondary school
  • Teacher of business studies in upper secondary school

Expanding your teacher certification

By studying at university, you can obtain teacher certification in more subjects after your teaching degree. We recommend that you contact a study counsellor at a university or at ULV to get recommendations on what to study.
