Gunnar von Heijne is a professor of theoretical chemistry at Stockholm University. He is one of Sweden's most well - cited researchers and, in addition to his own very successful research, has made extremely important contributions to Swedish bioinformatics and chemistry.

The Celsius Medal in gold is the Royal Swedish Society of Science's foremost prize and is awarded in the highest national competition. The medal is awarded in one of the three subject groups mathematics, physics and chemistry, and this year the subject group is chemistry.

Kungl. Vetenskaps-Societeten in Uppsala is Sweden's oldest academy of science, founded in 1710 (http://www.vetenskapssocietetenuppsala.se/sv/). One of its first secretaries was Anders Celsius, after whom the medal is named.
