In the category Social & ecological sustainability, the scholarship is awarded Eva Björkman for the innovation "Activated limestone for a living Baltic Sea". Eva Björkman is a researcher at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP), Stockholm University. The activated limestone binds phosphorus in the bottom sediment so that the emissions that cause the toxic summer blooms are reduced.
This leads to that the sea will be bathable in the summer for our future generations, and a balance will be created in the marine environment. The Baltic Sea will once again be a healthy inland sea:
“It feels great to receive the scholarship. The development of innovation is a team effort together with Sven Blomqvist at the Department of Ecology, Environment and Plant Sciences (DEEP) and SU's Innovation Office, Claes Magnusson. It feels very satisfying to have developed a product that in the long run contributes to a healthy Baltic Sea”.
