On this page you can find information that will help you get started with your studies. Your studies at Stockholm University begin with your admission. However, there are several steps from admission to actually starting your studies.

New student at Stockholm University
As a new student at Stockholm University, you probably have many questions about how everything works. Here we have collected all you need to know in order to start your studies.
Activate your university account
Before you start your studies, you need to activate your university account to access all the services at Stockholm University.
Register for the course
In order to retain the place you have been admitted to, it is important that you register for your courses. The registration serves as confirmation that you are taking the course, and it is done via the Ladok system. Registration typically opens two weeks before and closes one week after the start of the course.
Conditionally admitted
If you are conditionally admitted, you need to contact our Academic advisor before you can register.
Athena Learning Platform
Athena is Stockholm University’s digital learning platform. All our courses use Athena, and this is where you will find information during the course and can communicate with the teacher. When you register for a course, you automatically obtain access to the course page in Athena.
Welcome activities
In addition to lectures and exams, many other activities take place at the university. There is a rich student life and many opportunities to become involved in one’s education. At the beginning of the semester the Natural Science Association (NF) organizes welcome activities for new students. For international and exchange students Stockholm University also arrange welcome activities at the begining of each semester.

The Department of Astronomy is located on the 6the floor of the main building of the AlbaNova University Centre. The building is within walking distance of Stockholm University’s main campus, Frescati, and is adjacent to the newly built Albano area.

Always enter your social security number when contacting the student office! Also leave the title with the case number and previous correspondence in the letters as long as the case is ongoing.

Monday to Thursday at 09:00-11:30 and 13:00-15:00.

Closed on Swedish national holidays. Closed for visitors Wed-Fri (4-6 Sep.). Available on phone or e-mail.

Online counseling is available via Zoom. You are welcome to contact us to schedule an online meeting.
- Office hours
Drop-in on Tuesdays and Thursdays 12:30-13:30. You are also welcome to book an appointment.
- Phone hours
Weekdays 09:00-15:00. Closed August 15 och 16.
- Irregular office hours
Closed on Swedish national holidays. Drop-in Tuesday 8 October cancelled. Drop-in on October 10 and 17 moved to 12-13.
