Time: 09.00

End date: Wednesday 5 November 2025

Location: Tovetorp Zoological Field Station

We are delighted to invite you to this year's departmental retreat, the Spinach Soup. The retreat is a research-focused, 2-day event designed for socializing and mingling as a department in a different setting. This year, we will focus on curiosity—the spark behind science!

We invite everyone to present their work, and especially encourage PhD students and postdocs to present. To register for the Spinach Soup, please fill out the registration form on the link below. The registration deadline is 6th October.

Presentation guidelines

We ask everyone to think carefully about how they present their work, bearing in mind that we are a broad institute, with many fascinating subjects being researched. Please structure your talk around the following four questions, and keep your answers simple:

  1. What am I studying?
  2. Why?
  3. How?
  4. What have I found (if anything at this stage)

You could highlight a moment when curiosity shaped your work—whether by trying a new approach, following an unexpected idea, viewing a problem differently, or exploring puzzling findings. You might also describe experiments you are eager to pursue, mechanisms you want to uncover, or new questions raised by your research that spark your curiosity. This is, of course, optional.

Travel information

We will travel to Tovetorp by coach (bus). The coach will depart at 08:00 on Tuesday, 4 November, from Svante Arrhenius Väg 20G, i.e., the north entrance to the NPQ-houses. Second breakfast provided!

It is essential that you arrive on time, as it is difficult to reach Tovetorp by public transport (commuter train to Gnesta, and then hitch-hiking or a not-so-frequent bus). Phone numbers in case needed: Francisco (0732075000), Boel (0703438248), Marie (076-108 46 12).

We will arrive back at DEEP at ca. 17.30 on Wednesday, 5 Nov.

Important details

  • It is the policy at Tovetorp that outdoor shoes are not allowed indoors, so it is a good idea to bring indoor shoes/slippers.
  • Presentations will be held in the lecture hall at Tovetorp. Tovetorp provides a laptop (PC), so please save your presentations onto a USB stick; alternatively, you may bring your own laptop

Tovetorp Zoological Field Station

Tovetorp is a field station operated by the Department of Zoology at SU. It is regularly used for field courses in ecology and ethology, but is also often used for small conferences and workshops. It is located ca. 100 km southwest of Stockholm, between Gnesta and Nyköping. It is a comfortable place to stay, although it offers a bit more 'basic' facilities than a hotel. You sleep in three-bed rooms, with shared bathrooms and showers in the corridor. You do not need to bring sheets and towels. Tovetorp is located in the countryside, so bring whatever you will need for two days – there are no shops around. There will be time to go for a walk in the surroundings.
