Stockholm University Ranked 18th in the World in Environmental Science
Stockholm University has been ranked 18th globally in Environmental Science & Engineering in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities by Subject, commonly known as the Shanghai Ranking. This places the University among the top institutions worldwide for research excellence in environmental science.

The annual subject ranking evaluates more than 5,000 universities and highlights the world’s strongest research environments. Stockholm University also placed within the global top 50 in three additional subjects:
• Atmospheric Science – 32
• Earth Science – 50
• Oceanography – 50
Stockholm University is additionally ranked number one in Sweden in all four of these subjects.
Measures of research excellence
The Shanghai subject rankings assess universities on several indicators of research quality, including:
• The number of alumni and staff who have received major international awards
• The number of highly cited researchers in each field
• Publications in top-tier journals such as Nature and Science
• Overall research impact and international collaborations

Environmental Science & Engineering, which is Stockholm University’s highest-ranked subject this year, is a multidisciplinary field that brings together atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, environmental chemistry, ecology, oceanography, and climate dynamics. The ranking underscores the University’s commitment to tackling some of society’s most urgent challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution and sustainability transitions.
