New article on social justice in Sweden's forest berries industry
Linn Axelsson, Senior Lecturer, Docent in Human Geography at Stockholm University, has recently published an article titled "Harvesting Labour Justice: Interrogating the Social Implications of Sustainable Transformation Efforts in Sweden’s Forest Berry Industry" in the journal Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space.
In the article, Axelsson explores the social justice implications of sustainability initiatives within Sweden's forest berries industry. She critically analyzes how localization is often promoted as a solution to issues within global food systems, while simultaneously concealing exclusionary mechanisms, particularly regarding the role of temporary migrant workers. By examining ongoing transformations in Västerbotten, the article emphasizes the need for fair and democratic inclusion of global workers in sustainable food production.
Axelsson argues for a reimagining of food systems as spaces of collaboration and solidarity, urging a challenge to hierarchical global divisions of labor to create a truly inclusive food system.
