Traineeship

You will practice your knowledge and skills and you will learn how physical geographical work is organised and carried out in a company, organisation or authority. You are expected to participate in the daily work as any other employee.

Before starting your traineeship, the place of work and the external supervisor must be accepted by the course coordinator. The course starts with a mandatory introduction at the university after which you start your traineeship. After the traineeship you will report to the examiner at the university. The report should be in writing (in the form of a diary) an oral presentation.

Application for traineeship courses, is only possible for students that are admitted to one of the Master’s programmes at the Department of Physical Geography, or Master's Programme in Globalization, Environment and Social Change (Department of Human Geography), or Bachelor's Programme in Earth Science, Distance Learning (Departmen of Department of Geological Sciences).

No more than 15 credits (ECTS credits) of traineeship courses may be included in a degree.

Find internships

Start in good time to apply for an internship at an authority or within a company where your subject knowledge can be used. A tip is that most internships are advertised more than six months before they start.

As a student at Stockholm University you have the opportunity to join MyCareer, the university's job portal for students and recent graduates.

Instructions for internships

Start an internship - step by step

  1. Search for a suitable internship and supervisor at the internship yourself.
  2. Contact the teacher who is responsible for the course for each internship course (see below).
  3. Write a work plan of 1-2 pages. Start with information about yourself (name, address, e-mail address, telephone number and social security number). Then write a little briefly about the workplace and its activities, the supervisor's position, tasks during the internship period. The examining teacher (usually course coordinator) must have the proposal for the internship no later than two weeks before the internship begins.
  4. When the work plan is approved by the course coordinator and when he/she has been in contact with the supervisor at the internship, you will be admitted to the course. This must be done no later than one week before you start the internship so that you can be registered for the internship course.
  5. Before you start the internship, you must meet the course coordinator to get an introduction to the internship and information on how the examination is conducted. Detailed information on implementation and reporting can be read in the instructions for internships.
