The inauguration of professors and the doctoral conferment are academic traditions dating back to the Middle Ages. At the festive ceremony in Stockholm City Hall, new professors are installed in office and new doctors are conferred with a doctoral hat or a laurel wreath.
The traditional ceremony of the Inauguration of New Professors and Conferment of Doctoral Degrees is normally held once a year in Stockholm City Hall.
The Inauguration of New Professors
The professorial inauguration, or installation, is the part of the solemn ceremony in the City Hall where the newly appointed professors (appointed during the period 1 July 2022 - 30 June 2023), are welcomed and installed in office by the President, while their various subject areas are highlighted. The term "installation" comes from the church ritual when a cathedral chapter member was symbolically led to his chair in the cathedral, in Latin stallum.
The Conferment of Doctoral Degrees
The doctors who have defended their theses and received their doctoral degrees at the University (during the period 1 July 2022 - 30 June 2023) are celebrated in a solemn form. Doctoral hats, laurel wreaths and other insignia symbolizing the new dignity are awarded during the conferment ceremony, which was originally the formal activity that gave the doctors their degree and was a proof of professionalism. The word "promote", as in the Swedish "doktorspromotion", comes from the Latin promovere and means to move forward; promote.
