Learn more about formative assessment and feedback processes and how to design new theory and evidence informed practices. An online in-depth course, given asynchronously, based on engagement with peers through text.
This in-depth course is aimed university teacher from all academic areas with teaching experience and previously completed training in higher education teaching, UL1 or equivalent. The aim of the course is to learn more about formative assessment and feedback processes, map out existing formative assessment and feedback practices, and design new practices that are theory and evidence informed. Open for university teachers at Stockholm University and the university alliance Stockholm trio. The course corresponds to two weeks of studies (equivalent to 3 credits).
Please note that while the course has no scheduled meetings and tasks can be completed at times that suit you, there are a strict deadlines that must be adhered to. This is not a self-paced course.
About the course
In this course, we will discuss how formative assessment, feedback and peer review play a role in student learning in higher education. We will consider formative assessment, feedback and peer review from a programme-wide, course-wide as well as individual perspective, and we will, through texts discuss some recent research in the field, and consider how formative assessment feedback and peer review can be enhanced, and made more systematic within education programmes.
The course is run over period of about seven weeks, where activities are done in a coordinated, but asynchronous fashion, enabling you to follow your own progress, but also give feedback to others, and gain insights from others’ on your reflections and work. There are no course meetings, all activity is done via the Learning Management System. The course is equivalent to two weeks of study (equivalent to 3 credits). Course language is English.
During the course you will:
- Read in some of the latest research in the field of formative assessment and feedback.
- Do a curriculum mapping of a selection of courses offered at your department with a view on formative assessment and feedback.
- Plan for developments in your own practice using formative assessment and feedback practices.
Course content and structure
Course topic 1: 9 March — 20 March
Taking in the literature and reviewing the literature: You will read 7-10 papers presenting a state-of-the-art picture of formative assessment practices, present a paper to your peers, where you present your understanding of the literature you have read. Also you will read and give feedback to two other peers.
Course topic 2: 23 March — 3 April
Mapping practices at your department: You will conduct a mini curriculum mapping, whereby you view the current formative assessment and feedback practices at your department. You will be asked to analyze syllabi and other relevant course information. You will also give feedback to a minimum of two other peers.
Course topic 3: 23 March — 10 April
Developing your own practice: Based on a selection of literature you will be given the task of planning the development of formative assessment and feedback practices at your department or in your course. You will reflect on developments at the individual teaching level (Micro), the course level (Meso) and the programme-wide level (Macro).
Course topic 5: 10 April — 24 April
Examination: You will submit your course examination where you plan for the development of formative assessment and feedback practices using available literature. A practical plan is expected, as well as a research oriented reflection and you will also be required to submit learning design artefacts which you will use in your teaching.
Registration
The course is primarily intended for, and free of charge to, employees of (or affiliated with) Stockholm University, as well as employees of Karolinska Institutet and the Royal Institute of Technology. After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation from the system that it has been received. Once your application has been processed, you will receive a notification through the booking system regarding your placement. Your registration is binding, and cancellations later than four weeks before the course start will result in a 2000 SEK charge billed to the department. By registering, you confirm that your participation in the course has been approved by your department head or equivalent.
