The Reading and Writing group of Speculative Fiction in Autumn 2026
The Speculative Fiction & Environmental Humanities Reading Assemblage (SFEHRA) will have its first meeting on September 3rd, led by professor Andrew Jones, Department of Archaeology and Classical studies and Elisa Viteri Márquez, PhD student at the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies.

The reading and writing activity proposed looks for cracks, crevices, fissures, gaps, clefts, rifts or fractures, bringing together concepts from Environmental Humanities and our own disciplines.The SFEHRA explores the places where environmental humanities, speculative fiction, and the participants’ different disciplines overlap. We discuss a range of texts - academic and fictional - and develop tailor-made writing exercises that invite all participants to imagine other possible futures. During this semester, we will continue inquiring into the creative and academic possibilities of using speculative fiction as a research method following the lichen and its processes of composting, weathering, dwelling and sympoiesis. As part of the more-than-human world, the SFEHRA invites everyone interested in the speculative to join our monthly hybrid sessions for this new semester.
