We offer a variety of courses and programs in History and in Cultural Studies. Our courses and programs are mainly taught in Swedish as the language of instruction.

Courses

Our courses at undergraduate and advanced levels are mainly with Swedish as the language of instruction, but we also offer a few courses in English.

Undergraduate level

At the undergraduate level, we offer the courses Nordic History I and Nordic History II every autumn semester. These courses are aimed at international students interested in an introduction to Nordic history. The courses are taught in English and handle central themes in Nordic history from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Introduction to Nordic History I (1000–1750), 7,5 credits

Introduction to Nordic History II (1750–2015), 7,5 credits

Alongside the two courses above, the department offers the course The age of upheavals: Continuity and change in early modern Europe (7,5 credits) during the spring semester of 2026.

This course is taught in English and is available for incoming exchange students. For instructions on how to apply, please get in touch with our International Exchange Coordinator.

Advanced level

At the advanced level, we usually give a few courses with English as the language of instruction. The range of courses varies depending on the autumn or spring semester. Read more about our advanced-level courses via the links below:

Historical climate changes and their societal impacts, 7,5 credits

Samurai, Souls, and Seals: The History of Early Modern Japanese Foreign Relations, c. 1600-1830, 7,5 credits

Programmes

Besides a variety of history courses, the department offers courses in Cultural Management Studies, and a second cycle course in Publishing Studies, three undergraduate programs, one in close collaboration with Political Science, and another more to be compared to a Liberal Arts program, and two Master's programmes in history.

PhD in History Programme

The PhD programme is the highest level of study at the University. The PhD program consists of three years of dissertation work and one year of coursework.
