Governance and Management of Social-Ecological Systems

This course explores the various ways of understanding and analyzing how people make decisions (individually and collectively), use rules and norms, and learn to govern and manage social-ecological systems.

The course combines economic and behavioural perspectives on decision-making, approaches in ecosystem management that enables learning, how institutions shape governance of social-ecological systems, and how various forms of governance affect adaptation to social-ecological changes. Successful examples of changed management and governance are explored.


Modules

The course consists of the following four modules:

  1. Transformative Strategies for Governance (4 ECTS)
  2. Economic Perspectives (4 ECTS)
  3. Theories and Methods for Governance of the Commons (3 ECTS)
  4. Adaptive Processes in Social-Ecological Systems (4 ECTS)

Teaching Format

Teaching consists of lectures, group exercises, and seminars. Participation on group exercises and seminars and activities associated with these is compulsory.


Assessment

Measurement of knowledge takes place through written and oral presentations and activity at seminars.
