The financial system and the macroeconomy

The course provides you with an overview of the financial system, its players and their operations, as well as the interplay between the financial system and the rest of the economy.

Upon completion of this course, the student is expected to be able to describe:

  • how to calculate the market value of simplified financial assets such as loans and bonds.
  • the financial system’s main players and their business models and operations.
  • the business models of banks and bank-like entities, why runs can arise and how the entities are regulated.
  • the interplay between the central bank, commercial banks and the rest of the economy.
  • theoretical frameworks of a financial crisis, possible chains of events in a crisis, provide examples of crises, and give account of episodes that could have evolved to a crisis.
  • financial regulation.
  • the government’s and government agencies’ roles in a financial crisis, as well as sovereign default.

This is a 7.5 credit course. Course material will be available on the learning platform.


Teaching Format

Instruction is given in the form of lectures. The language of instruction is English.


Assessment

The course is examined on the basis of a written examination.

Examiner

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
