Economic Integration

The purpose of this course is to analyse economic rationales and consequences of economic integration and in particular the European integration. The course is part of the Master’s programme in Economics.

The European Union is one of several economically integrated regional blocs presently forming in the world. This integration process has real as well as monetary aspects. On the monetary side there is the introduction of a common currency, and on the real side we have trade integration and free mobility of goods and factors.

Questions such as ”What is happens to countries inside and outside the union?”, ”How will the location of European industry be affected?”, and ”What is the optimal area for one currency?” will be treated. The course consists of two parts. Part I deals with the real side of integration, whereas part II deals with monetary aspects.

This is a 7.5 credit course.
