Physics for geoscientists
Especially the course will deal with the following themes:
• Interpretation and description of geological phenomena wit the help of physics
• Solvations of simpler physical problems using Newtonian mechanics with the help of basic concepts such as force, momentum and energy
• Application of thermodynamic concepts to simple geophysical systems
• Discussion of basic properties of mechanical and electromagnetic waves an their influence on geological processes
• Application of optical processes of refraction, reflection, interference and diffraction of waves in geosciences
• Use of basic concepts in electromagnetic field theory , strength theory (e.g. tension, deformation and elasticity)
• Application of basic concepts in fluid mechanics
Teaching Format
The course consists of lectures, group teaching, seminars, exercises, project work and laboratories. Excursion to geologically intersting sites can also be included in the programme.
Assessment
The course is examined through written and oral examinations, hand-ins, presentation of project work and written labreports.
Examiner
