Quantum Optics

Quantum optics is the study of light and its interaction with matter at microscopic scales, and forms the basis for many of today’s technologies and fields of research.

The course deals with experimental methods in quantum optics with an emphasis on quantum information applications and an overview of experimental techniques. These include generation and detection of single photons, quantum measurement, quantum noise, quantum correlation, light-atom interactions and experimental demonstrations of quantum cryptography and quantum teleportation.

This is an advanced course given during the daytime.

Teaching Format

The course consists of both lectures and lab exercises.
Laboratory participation is obligatory. Under special circumstances, the examiner can waive participation in certain obligatory lessons after consultation with the responsible instructor.

Assessment

Examination takes place through an oral exam and written laboratory report (the oral exam can be taken only upon submission of a written laboratory report).
