Quantum Field Theory for condensed matter

This is an advanced course where the machinery of quantum field theory is applied to condensed matter systems.

In this course we start from second quantization and study quantum field theoretical formulation of many particle theory. The concept of effective action and effective theory, such as mean field theory, is discussed, as well as other important concepts such as linear response theory and Fermi liquid theory. We also study quantum field theory at finite temperature, spontaneous symmetry breaking and phase transitions. Finally, topological effects in many particle systems are introduced.

This is a Master's level course, given in half pace during daytime.

Teaching Format

The teaching consists of lectures and problem solving sessions. There will also be active learning elements, such as small group discussions and/or student presentations.

Assessment

Written exam at the end of the course, hand-in exercises, active participation in seminars.
