French III for Teaching at Secondary Schools
French III within the Subject Teacher Education Programme at Stockholm University is a 30-credit undergraduate course designed to deepen students’ linguistic and academic competencies. The course combines advanced written language proficiency, linguistic theory and methodology, and an independent research project in the form of an academic essay. Through instruction in French and the analysis of authentic materials, students further develop both their linguistic accuracy and their ability to engage in research-oriented work in preparation for teaching at upper secondary level.

Franska III inom Ämneslärarprogrammet vid Stockholms universitet är en kurs på 30 högskolepoäng på grundnivå som syftar till att fördjupa studenternas språkliga och vetenskapliga kompetens. Kursen förenar avancerad skriftlig språkfärdighet med språkvetenskaplig teori och metod samt ett självständigt arbete i form av en akademisk uppsats. Genom undervisning på franska och analys av autentiskt material utvecklar studenterna sin språkliga precision och sin förmåga att arbeta forskningsinriktat, som en förberedelse för undervisning i gymnasieskolan.
The course comprises 30 credits and is divided into three components
Modules
Modern French (7.5 credits)
This component focuses on strengthening students’ written language proficiency. Students deepen their knowledge of grammatical structures, expand their vocabulary (approximately 4,500 words and key collocations), and practice typical features of written French.
Linguistics II (7.5 credits)
This component addresses central theories and key concepts in linguistics. Students apply linguistic analytical methods to authentic French-language materials.
Independent Research Project (15 credits)
Students complete a minor research project in the form of an academic essay. The essay is written under supervision and defended in a seminar, during which the student also serves as an opponent on another student’s work.
Teaching Format
Instruction is conducted in French and takes the form of lectures, seminars, and practical exercises. Assessment includes written examinations, oral examinations, and the independent research project.

Assessment is conducted in French and includes both written and oral components.
Modern French (7.5 credits): assessed through a written on-campus examination.
Linguistics II (7.5 credits): assessed through one written examination and two oral examinations.
Independent Research Project (15 credits): assessed through the defence of the student’s own essay in a seminar and by acting as opponent on another student’s work.
