Structural Geology and Mapping

The course covers large scale structures (folds, shear zones, faults), microstructures, deformation mechanisms, kinematic indicators, tectonics, rock mechanics and the measurement and interpretation of structural data.

Earth’s rocks preserve a record of the forces and processes that have shaped our planet through time. In this course you will learn to read and interpret this record to determine the deformation history of rocks. This includes the analysis of deformation structures ranging across scales, understanding deformation mechanisms and kinematics, knowledge of rock mechanics and rheology, as well as the interpretation of geological maps. You will first learn the theoretical framework and then have the opportunity to use this knowledge to deduce geological structures during the field trip. These skills are essential for interpreting past deformation as well as for today’s challenges such as infrastructure development, natural hazard assessment, and resource characterization and exploration.







The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
