The module is part of the Urban and Regional Planning Programme, 180 credits, at Stockholm University.
The course consists of fieldwork and academic writing, usually carried out in groups. Each paper project addresses a topic relevant to urban and regional planning and current in the municipality studied. This may concern ongoing or completed planning processes, their organisation and implementation.
The course begins with the selection of a topic, literature review, research questions, methodological choices and more. The field study is then conducted on site. After compiling and analysing the results, the work is presented both orally and in writing.
The course includes a five-day field course in a Swedish region. The location varies by semester. The field course typically starts with an introduction to planning in the region, after which student groups collect material for their papers in different municipalities. Data collection methods may include surveys, interviews and observations. Each group is assigned a supervisor who meets with them before, during and after the field course.
As an alternative, a field course is offered in Berlin over approximately seven days, as part of a Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) within Erasmus+. The overarching theme is Sustainable Transformation of Neighbourhoods in Europe. The course is conducted in collaboration with students and staff from the University of Groningen, Humboldt University of Berlin, Politecnico di Milano and Stockholm University.
