Social Science Methods and Research Design in Human Geography
The course covers central qualitative and quantitative methods used in human geography. It focuses on analyzing and critically examining the limitations and opportunities of various methods.
The course is part of the Bachelor's Programme in Human Geography – Society, Environment, and Global Processes, 180 credits. It requires 60 credits of completed courses in human geography, including the Degree Project in Human Geography, 7.5 credits, or equivalent.
In the course, students develop skills in data collection, processing, analysis, and interpretation. The course also addresses important ethical considerations in scientific research. The concluding part focuses on designing and critically evaluating the methodological aspects of a study by writing a thesis proposal.
Teaching Format
Mandatory instruction includes an introduction, lectures, and seminars.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Review, apply, and critically analyze scientific methods and the implications of methodological choices concerning data collection, analysis, and interpretation of various types of empirical data.
- Demonstrate an advanced ability to evaluate and discuss different methodological approaches.
- Discuss and assess ethical considerations in scientific analysis.
- Design a study and apply methods to address human geographical questions.
Assessment
Assessment is conducted through submission assignments and a take-home exam.
