Heritage as field of research and practice
This course provides an advanced and critically reflective introduction to cultural heritage studies as a research field from both historical and contemporary perspectives. Focusing on concepts and theoretical frameworks central to cultural heritage studies, the course examines and discusses the role of the past in society.
Key themes include the constructions, uses, and materializations of the past, as well as cultural heritage as both an authorizing and authorized discourse in relation to ideas of identity and belonging.
Attention is also given to laws, conventions, and regulations concerning cultural heritage. The course applies theories and methods from current research to practical challenges and issues that may arise in the work of documenting, interpreting, preserving, and utilizing cultural heritage.
Teaching Format
The teaching consists of lectures, seminars, methodological exercises, and field trips.
Assessment
The course is assessed through ongoing oral assignments and a written examination.
