Annotation and Management of Primary Data
This course provides a practical orientation in which the students develop their ability to handle and organize primary data from under-resourced and sparsely documented languages.
The course primarily focuses on annotating (marking up) and carrying out an initial analysis of linguistic data using relevant tools
- for acoustic analysis (for example, Praat),
- for transcription (for example, ELAN),
- for glossing, coding, and interlinear analysis of recorded or elicited material (for example, FLEx).
We apply phonetic and phonemic transcription of a language that differs from Swedish, in accordance with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).
We discuss phonological and morphological analysis of a language less familiar to the students, as well as aspects of data management, long-term archiving, and making primary data accessible.
Teaching Format
- The teaching consists of lectures, laboratory sessions, and practical exercises, and active participation is expected.
- Instruction is conducted in the language specified for each course session.
It is delivered either on-line or on campus, as indicated for each course session.
Assessment
- The course is assessed through written laboratory reports and take-home assignments.
- For course sessions taught in English, examination is conducted in English. For course sessions taught in Swedish, examination is conducted in Swedish.
The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course.
We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course,
your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
