The course is designed to introduce you to the fundamental concepts and methods of speech data analysis and processing. Through a blend of theory and practice, you will explore and understand key techniques in speech processing. You will also learn about acoustic properties of speech and their relationship to speech production mechanisms, providing you with a deeper understanding of fundamental techniques used in speech technology. The course includes:

  • Fundamentals of Speech Analysis – gain a deeper understanding of how speech data can be represented, processed and analyzed in time and frequency domains.
  • Acoustic theory of speech production – learn how to identify and quantify crucial acoustic properties of speech sounds and how to relate them to physiological aspects of speech production.
  • Practical speech analysis skills – explore the techniques in the light of phonetic phenomena by applying them to real speech analysis tasks using standard phonetic tools.

Teaching Format

Instruction is given in the form of lectures and laboratory sessions.

Assessment

This course is examined on the basis of written assignments and a written examination.
