Gender and gender equality in early childhood education and care

This course is about how issues around gender and equality affect and take place in everyday preschool life. We look at both older and newer research on how gender and equality are reflected in teaching, in the work with quality and in how preschools work based on the curriculum.

You will practice using research in practical work – that is, how to think and act in teaching to promote gender equality. The course also addresses modern theories about gender and equality that have developed during the 21st century, and the new questions that these theories raise.

We will review how different perspectives, such as poststructuralism, posthumanism and intersectionality, can help us understand and work with gender in preschool. You will also learn about examples from research that is closely connected to preschool practice, such as intervention studies where different ways of working with gender equality have been tested.

The schedule will be available no later than one month before the start of the course. We do not recommend print-outs as changes can occur. At the start of the course, your department will advise where you can find your schedule during the course.
Note that the course literature can be changed up to two months before the start of the course.
