Language and societal challenges

Language and Social Challenges is one of the permanent research groups within Swedish and Scandinavian Languages at the Department of Swedish and Multilingualism. It brings together sociolinguistically and discourse analytically oriented researchers who are interested in linguistic issues in relation to social, ecological and economic sustainability.

Network Language and Power

Language and power as a field of study has a long tradition, but it has become more relevant in recent years due to the rise of populism and societies becoming increasingly polarised.

About me

My research concerns literacy practices and communication in institutional settings. An earlier project dealt with elder care, where documentation plays an increasing role. Currently, me and by colleagues are wrapping up a project which investigates information and knowledge formation related to prenatal heart faliure diagnosis. Link to project web site at Uppsala University.

My main areas of interest are discourse analysis, social semiotics, multimodality and linguistic ethnography.

From November 2025, I am a part time visiting professor at Södertörn University.

For six years as a professor of Sociolingustics at Uppsala University (2012-2018) and  before that I was a professor of Swedish at Södertörn University (2018-2012).

I teach mainly sociolinguistics, language policy, theory and method.

I am the supervisor the doctoral students Shiro Shibata (main supervisor) and Lisa Rudebeck.
