Research project Foster care assignment - On foster carers’ preparation and experiences of becoming and being a foster carer
Preparations, transitions, and experiences during the first year
Foster homes are the most common form of home for children who, for various reasons, cannot live in their families of origin and need placement from child welfare services. The foster care assignment is extensive and entails a significant change in family life, consisting of receiving a child, providing care around the clock, and entering into multiple collaborative relationships around the child. Previous research emphasizes that preparation including training and ongoing support are important factors for foster carers’ ability to contribute with stability and quality care for children. This project examines foster carers’ preparation and experiences during the first year.
