According to the principle of primacy of EU law, EU law takes unconditional precedence over national law. This law consists of treaties, legislation, case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union, international agreements and other legal acts adopted jointly by the Member States, or delegated to the EU under the Lisbon Treaty, which affect virtually all areas of law in one way or another. The Swedish Constitution also provides that no law or regulation may be passed in breach of the European Convention on Human Rights (which deals, inter alia, with the right to a fair trial, respect for private life and the right to freedom of expression).
The Department of Law conducts research in European law in a number of areas of central importance to the European integration project - including European constitutional and institutional law, the internal market and competition law. Of particular interest is the interaction of European law with national law, and in particular Swedish law.
