The programme provides knowledge about children’s and young people’s conditions in society and culture. You study their rights and opportunities for influence in questions that concern their own lives, future, and society at large.

The programme is transdisciplinary. Children’s and young people’s identities and relations in families, leisure time, schools, and in other institutions are studied based on theories in societal and cultural studies. The education also touches on how the view of childhood changes across space and time.

You have the opportunity to create your own specialisation by elective courses of 30 credits (ECTS) and choice of essay topic for the degree project of 30 credits.

You can, for example, choose to immerse yourself in topics about children and young people in relation to migration, in relation to culture, or children and young people in vulnerable life situations. You can also choose to study parts of the education abroad through internship or the degree project.

Programme Overview

The programme is a two-year long full-time programme of 120 credits. During the first semester, you get an introduction to child and youth studies as well as current research in the field. During the second and third semesters, the focus is on different methodologies that are used in child and youth studies, such as ethnography, narrative analysis, and interviews with children and young people.

You also read elective courses of 30 credits that give you an opportunity to profile yourself and immerse yourself in topics within the child and youth studies field. Examples of such topics are migration, youth culture, violence, and children’s leisure time. You can also choose to do field work or internship during the course of the education. During the final semester, you write a degree project of 30 credits. You can choose to do both field work and degree project abroad.

In the program, there are obligatory courses of 90 credits (including a degree project of 30 credits) and elective courses of 30 credits in total.
