Hela titeln: The Royal Oath in Sweden: Origins, Representations, and practices of a Dual-Performative Ritual
Abstract
The purpose of this lecture is to examine the oath that the Swedish king was required to take on the day of his election during the late Middle Ages. The royal oath was the result of a rapid evolution that came to bind the king not only to God but also to all the inhabitants of his kingdom. Its formulation bears the imprint both of Sweden’s deep integration into the political culture of the European continent and of the successive conflicts that had unfolded since the thirteenth century. The oath was also a rite that formed part of a broader ceremony: that of the royal election. Paying close attention to the evolution of this rite allows us to better understand the significance of the oath and its practical use as a political tool.
