The research primarily focuses on understanding how mammalian cells maintain genomic stability and by which mechanisms low doses of gamma radiation, UV radiation and certain chemicals destabilise the genome. The focus is on nucleotide pool imbalance and oxidation. There are strong inter-individual variations among humans regarding the maintenance of genomic stability and response to toxic agents which could be due to the genetic background and life style factors. Understanding the underlying mechanisms that make some individuals sensitive to UV and ionizing radiation or chemicals is very important for estimating individual risk of cancer, diabetes complications, cardiovascular and other age-related diseases.
