NILAS Research seminar - Kim Beecheno postdoctoral researcher at Uppsala University and Guest Researcher at NILAS
Brazil is a key place in which to study the intersections between digital culture and religion because social media has been harnessed by religious celebrities in order to further debates on gender politics. This research focuses on Cristiane and Renato Cardoso of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God (Igreja Universal Reino de Deus), who style themselves as Brazil’s foremost couple on relationship advice. Using rhetorics of male supremacy and glamourised femininity, they form an important part of the anti-feminist discourse in the country, yet also demonstrate the ways in which Evangelical Christians in the Global South adopt and adapt to modern day postfeminism.
Kim Beecheno is a postdoctoral researcher at Uppsala University, conducting an EU Marie Curie project on Digital Media and Pentecostal Subjectivities. She has a PhD in Sociology of Religion from King’s College London and an MA in Latin American Studies from the University of London. She is a guest researcher at NILAS between Jan-June 2025.
The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues. It welcomes the presentation of papers from researchers and PhD students from different social science disciplines.
The seminar takes place on Fridays every second week (odd numbers) at the Library of the Institute of Latin American Studies (House B, Floor 5).
