During the past decade, Brazil has been the setting for ongoing disputes at the crossroads of gender, sexuality, politics and religion. While progressive groups long for structural and behavioral changes, conservative ones fight to legitimate existing modes of structuring and organizing social life, inequalities included. In this seminar, I discuss and compare contrasting visions of possible Brazilian futures by examining the interplay of bodies, objects, gender and power in recent public demonstrations of resistance or compliance taking place in the country.

The research seminar on Latin American studies is open to scholars interested in Latin American issues.
