Presentation club

The idea behind the Presentation club is that junior researchers can develop their presentation skills in a “safe” environment. Young researchers can considerably benefit from others’ feedback on presenting scientific data, in particular when it is done in a favorable context.

Organizer: Julie Lasselin

Purpose: To develop presentation skills in a safe and friendly environment.

Frequency: One every 1,5–2 months, on Thursday, 14:00–15:00

Where: Tranbär, Albano, 3rd floor

Who: Junior researchers (Research assistants, Master students, PhD students, post-docs, junior researchers/lecturers)

Set up

  • Presentation of a junior researcher for 10-15 min in a formal manner (better if on their own work but can also be a scientific article, presentation of a scientific topic, etc.)
  • Feedback on the presentation for 30-45min, moderated by a person of the choice of the speaker.

Rules

  • Only the way to present is discussed, not the scientific content.
  • Everyone has a presentation style and the aim is not to have all the same style but to improve own style.
  • Every feedback should be with the aim at helping the speaker improving their own skills.
  • Every feedback has to be balanced: with points to develop or to work on as well as positive aspects of the presentation and strengths of the junior researcher’s presentation style.
  • Every aspect of the feedback, positive or “negative”, has to be on a constructive tone
  • One person at a time is giving feedback.
  • The moderator chooses who gives feedback and in which order.

Role of the moderator

The moderator will allow the presenter to make the best of their time in the Presentation club. The moderator’s role is thus more than organizing the discussion. It is also being able to understand the presenter’s feelings and act accordingly. The moderator’s roles include, but are not limited, to:

  • Knowing the rules of the Presentation club and enforcing them. For instance, if the feedback of a discussant contains only “negative” points, the moderator should remind them to provide one or two positive aspects of the presentation.
  • Ensuring that several discussants can give their opinion. For instance, the moderator can decide to give a maximum time for each discussant.
  • Organizing the discussion by choosing who gives feedback, and in which order (also according to what the presenter would need).
  • Being able to decide to switch of discussant if the discussion is not constructive or if the moderator feels that the presenter has difficulties to understand or bear the feedback.
  • The moderator can also decide to stop the Presentation club at any time.
